DEMINO, Russia — Artem Zhmurko won his first cross-country World Cup race Saturday, leading a Russian sweep in a men’s 30-kilometer pursuit event.
Earlier, overall World Cup leader Justyna Kowalczyk of Poland captured her seventh win of the season by dominating the women’s 15K pursuit to capture her seventh win of the season.
Zhmurko surged up the last slope of the course to edge a pack of 12 skiers at the finish line. He clocked 1 hour, 15 minutes, 23.3 seconds in a combined 15K classic style and 15K freestyle race. Ilia Chernousov was 0.9 seconds behind for second, followed by Sergej Shiriaev, another 0.6 seconds behind
World Cup overall leader Petter Northug of Norway and many other top skiers skipped the event.
Kowalczyk finished in 41:50.8 seconds in a combined 7.5K classic and 7.5K freestyle race that she led from the start.
Evi Sachenbacher-Stehle of Germany made a final-lap surge to beat a pack of four Russian skiers and finish second, 9.8 seconds back. Russia’s Olga Schuchkina was another 11.4 seconds behind for third
