Last weekend, we were reaching for the sun block. This weekend, we'll be reaching for sweaters. Maybe even an umbrella.

A coastal eddy has formed, sending cool, moist air ashore, causing the marine layer to become thick. The clouds won't burn off until mid-morning, or later, along most of coastline on Saturday. And there could be sporadic drizzle west of the mountains. Daytime highs across San Diego County will only be in the50s and 60s, says the National Weather Service.

A low pressure system will cause further cooling on Sunday, which is Mother's Day. Temperatures are expected to be 5 to 10 degrees below normal. And winds will pop inland, gusting 25-35 mph.

Honoring your mom, or anyone who is a mother figure, is hard to figure out each year. Yes, moms love the handcrafted coupon books, decoupage trays, and hand-traced flowers (I keep mine in my kitchen). But moms also love to be pampered and just spending the day chilling with the kids. Mother’s Day is sure to be a beautiful day along San Diego’s coastline, and we’ve listed a number of ways to enjoy the day. Because no matter how much you spend on mom, the real value is your gift of thought and time. Happy Mother’s Day!

Flowers: Surround your mom with flowers and take her to the Mother’s Day Celebration at the Flower Fields in Carlsbad. Visit the spectacular 50 acres of Flower Fields, which has been an annual colorful celebration of spring for over 60 years. Moms will enjoy creating a freshly picked bouquet from the abundance of Giant Tecolote Ranunculus. From noon to 5 p.m., entertainment will be provided by Sequin in the Sky. Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 3 to 10. Optional wagon rides available too. The fields are open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the last day of the season is May 15. Mother's day celebrations in Dallas

What an amazing way to celebrate my 10th Mother's Day! Watching my own story on the big screen! Whew, I'm glad I already have the evening gown I'll need for the premiere. I bought it for the day my husband and I renewed our vows to celebrate our new commitments to each other as parents. My only complaint about the movie trailer is that there's too much focus on me. Really it's an ensemble cast, as it was in real life.

Real change, big change, is built upon relationships and the belief that together we can do things none of us could do alone. I've found that this applies in spades to mothers -- and fathers.

So the main ingredient to celebrate Mother's Day is, of course, a mother, but from there, where you go is up to you.

Is your mother the sort who wants to wander through iris fields? Determine her own omelette destiny at a Mother's Day brunch? Take a carriage ride?

We suggest you ask her what she wants assuming you haven't already because there are lots of things to do in Salem and beyond this weekend.

DALLAS — No stranger to "best" lists, The Grape on Greenville Avenue in Dallas made a national list of Top 10 Mother's Day Brunch Spots compiled by Gayot for MSN.com.

The Grape is first on the list, followed by nine other notables around the country such as A Voce Columbus in New York, Bluehour in Portland, Ore., Zuni Cafe in San Francisco, and Michael's in Santa Monica.

Of The Grape, the writeup says: "totally unpretentious and casual, this European-style bistro is the kind of place we'd all like to have in our neighborhood," and acknowledges the restaurant's Texan roots "with dishes like the jalapeno-cheese biscuit with fried chicken and cheddar.

ANGELINA COUNTY,
He came home from war, giving Angela Russell the Mother's Day gift of a lifetime.

"He ran into the house as I was running to the door," Russell said. "We met each other at the door and he grabbed me up and I was very excited."

After 10 months in Afghanistan and a year away from home, Gage Richey is reunited with his mom.

"It was probably the greatest feeling in the world coming off the plane, back in the states after being over there," Richey said.

Mothers come in all shapes and sizes. But in our eyes and hearts, we consider our mother as the most beautiful woman in the world. This mother’s day, Asian Journal Northern California pays tribute to a few of the (beauty queen) mothers in the Filipino-American community who are not only crowned for their beauties, but have shown their inner glow through their hearts by being loving mothers and wives, as well as role models.

mother’s 70th birthday, an Americanized Vietnamese son searches for answers to the family matriarch’s question: “Who will light incense to the dead when we’re gone?”

My mother turned 70 recently, and though she remains a vivacious woman -- her hair is still mostly black and there is a girlish twang in her laughter -- mortality nevertheless weighs heavily on her soul. After the gifts were opened and the cake eaten, mother whispered this confidence to her younger sister: "Who will light incense to the dead when we’re gone?"

"Honestly, I don't know,” my aunt replied. “None of my children will do it, and we can forget the grandchildren. They don't even understand what we are doing. I guess when we're gone, the ritual ends.

Military families have paid in hunt for bin Laden
SAN JOSE, Calif. - It is part of Osama bin Laden's terrible legacy -- almost a decade American military funerals, reports CBS News correspondent John Blackstone.
"Part of what it takes to live in a great nation," said Ron Ross, who buried his 22-year-old son last month in Green Bay, Wis.

His son, Corporal Justin Ross, was killed in Afghanistan.

So, too, was James Malachowski, a 25-year-old Marine.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Plastic surgery may not seem like the perfect gift, but a new survey shows that more moms have a nip and tuck on their Mother's Day wish list.

Mother's Day is Sunday (yes, a few days from now) and in case you don't have tickets to the various now sold out events across the city, here are a few ideas to show mom how much you appreciate her.

Austin, TX, May 07, 2011 --(PR.com)-- With Mother's Day on Sunday, the editors of DVD and Blu-ray website DiscDish.com didn’t want to celebrate by guessing which films mothers might like best. Instead, they’re asking mothers what they really like to watch — and so far, the films have some surprises.

Nine DiscDish.com writers asked their mothers to reveal their three favorite films and explain why. Interestingly, all the moms chose different movies. As expected, many of the moms picked romantic comedies, such as 1999’s "Notting Hill" and 1942’s "Once Upon a Honeymoon," and romance films, including 1965’s sweeping epic "Doctor Zhivago" and 1987’s "Dirty Dancing.

MA60 twin turboprop
JAKARTA, Indonesia— A passenger plane carrying 27 people crashed Saturday as it was about to land in Indonesia's eastern province of West Papua, killing at least 15, officials said.

Transportation ministry spokesman Bambang Ervan said the Chinese-made Xian MA60 twin turboprop-powered plane belonging to a state-owned company went down just before landing in Kaimana. The flight originated in Sorong, another town in the province.

Airline chief Jhony Sardjono told the state-run Antara news agency that the plane was carrying 18 adult passengers, two children and a baby. He said the plane was en route from Sorong city to Kaimana airport.

Other news reports spoke of 25 passengers.

'The information I received, the aircraft sank because it was crashed in the deep sea,' Bambang said, adding that rescue workers, joined by local fishermen were searching for the victims.

He said 15 bodies had been discovered so far while 12 others were remained missing and feared dead.
