SAYREVILLE, N.J. -- A Staten Island man was indicted yesterday on two counts of vehicular homicide in an alleged prescription drug-fueled crash that fatally injured an octogenarian couple, according to a published report.
Prosecutors claim Kevin Laerum, 52, was under the influence of two prescription drugs when his Ford F-150 crossed into oncoming traffic on Bordentown Avenue on Nov. 27, 2009, striking a Toyota Camry carrying four people, according to MyCentralJersey.com.
There were four people in the Camry at the time of the crash. Two of them, Ricardo and Aida Clarin -- 83 and 80 respectively -- were fatally injured and pronounced dead on Dec. 17, according to the report.
Gingergale Clarin, the couple's 41-year-old daughter-in-law, was also seriously hurt. Her 13-year-old daughter suffered minor injuries.
Two passengers in the Toyota, Ricardo Clarin, 83, and Aida Clarin, 80, were seriously injured and were rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, Sewitch said.
Both were pronounced dead on Dec. 17, nearly three weeks later, from complications from injuries suffered in the crash.
Gingergale Clarin, who is the couple’s daughter-in-law, also was seriously injured in the collision, Sewitch said.
The 41-year-old Edison woman also was taken to the hospital, while her 13-year-old daughter, who also was in the car, suffered minor injuries, he said.
Prosecutors allege that Laerum was under the influence of two prescription drugs at the time of the collision.
Sewitch, who declined to name the drugs, said Thursday’s indictment resulted from a lengthy investigation that has gone on since the crash 19 months ago.
“It was a detailed and complicated investigation,” Sewitch said.
“It required the opinions of several expert witnesses, and there were other issues that required additional attention.”
Laerum had not been taken into custody late Thursday afternoon, he said.
Neither bail nor an arraignment date had been set at that time.
