Some political observers are already calling Governor Andrew Cuomo a frontrunner for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination.
That follows a successful first term, during which Cuomo followed through on a number of significant promises made during his gubernatorial campaign.
Bob Bellafiore was an advisor to former Governor George Pataki. He says Cuomo clearly studied the playbooks of his father Mario Cuomo and his former boss President Bill Clinton, "How to triangulate, how to play a legislature off an executive, how to appeal to individual legislators in a legislature, how to appoint people. Operationally, he's figured all that stuff out. And it showed.
What’s more, Cuomo is likely to benefit from two pro-GOP cycles (2010 and 2012) that deprive the Democrats of fresh talent. Something similar happened to the GOP in 2006 and 2008, which is one reason Republican party regulars are so unenthusiastic about their 2012 presidential options. I’m scratching my head, trying to come up with other recently elected or nationally prominent Democrats who’ve demonstrated the political skill of Andrew Cuomo. The only one I can think of is education secretary Arne Duncan, but presumably he’ll need to be elected to some sort of office before running for president.
Looking for a time-waster for the long weekend? Then ask yourself this simple???????????.
