Top European media outlet refuses to join Facebook News

London (CNN Business)Facebook is launching its news product in Germany without media giant Axel Springer, which publishes the country's most popular daily newspaper and says it won't participate due to the "inappropriately low remuneration" offered for journalistic content.

The social media platform said Monday that Facebook News will launch in Germany in May. The product, which Facebook (FB) describes as a "dedicated space for journalism," was first offered in the United States and expanded to the United Kingdom in January.

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy sentenced to jail in historic ruling

Paris (CNN)A French court on Monday sentenced former President Nicolas Sarkozy to three years in prison for corruption and influence peddling, but suspended two years of the sentence.

President from 2007 to 2012, he was found guilty of trying to illegally obtain information from a senior magistrate in 2014 about an ongoing investigation into his campaign finances.

The judge said Sarkozy did not need to serve time in jail. He could serve the sentence by wearing an electronic bracelet at home.

Sao Paulo (CNN)Hospital ICUs are reaching their limits across Brazil, as health experts and state officials beg the government to impose stricter lockdown measures to reduce coronavirus transmission.

The country's ICU occupancy rates are the worst since the start of the pandemic, according to a Feb 26 report by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), a Brazilian Ministry of Health research institution.

Eighteen of Brazil's 26 states and one federal district have ICU's at over 80% capacity, federal and state data show. Nine of those are at the edge of collapse at over 90% capacity.
