'Read Across America Day,' once synonymous with Dr. Seuss, is diversifying. Here's why things have changed.
Monday marks the start of National Reading Month – with celebrations across the nation planned for "Read Across America Day" on Tuesday.
The day will look a little different this year, with many U.S. students learning virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But the National Education Association has planned a variety of virtual events – not just in March, but all year – to mark the occasion.
That's not the only difference: The NEA has pivoted from popular children's author Dr. Seuss to a focus on diverse children's books, a decision that has generated controversy on social media.
How Cuomo's sexual harassment, nursing home scandals unraveled
Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s make-or-break political moment amid allegations he sexually harassed young women — including two former aides — and downplayed nursing home death numbers follows a tumultuous year since the first coronavirus case hit New York.
The saga spanned long-simmering accusations that his administration intentionally undercounted nursing home COVID-19 deaths to defend state policies, as well as mounting claims of an history of abusive behavior by Cuomo and his aides towards lawmakers, government officials and reporters.
All our recent progress with Covid-19 could be wiped out by variants, CDC director says. 'Please stay strong'
The US is at risk of losing all its recent gains in the battle against Covid-19 as highly contagious variants take advantage of Americans getting lax with safety measures.
"Please hear me clearly: At this level of cases with variants spreading, we stand to completely lose the hard-earned ground we have gained," said Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

For Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, vaccinating all Mexicans is a matter of responsible national health policy as well as social justice.
"Vaccines will start arriving little by little," he said on February 15, during his daily morning press conference, a week after returning to public activities after contracting Covid-19.

China Tries To Discredit Female Uighur Witnesses By Releasing Private Sexual Health Data
BEIJING (Reuters) — China, under growing global pressure over its treatment of minority Muslim Uighurs in far west Xinjiang, is mounting an unprecedented and aggressive campaign to push back, including explicit attacks on women who have made claims of abuse.
As allegations of human rights violations in Xinjiang mount, with a growing number of Western lawmakers accusing China of genocide, Beijing is focusing on discrediting the female Uighur witnesses behind recent reports of abuse.

Congress Is About To Send You A Pile Of Money
Democrats are about to make it rain.
This week, the Senate is expected to take up and pass President Joe Biden’s massive $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package, the fifth major piece of legislation to be considered since the pandemic began about a year ago.
The bill includes $1,400 payments for most adults and for each of their dependents. That means households will receive much larger payments than Congress delivered in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act in March 2020, which paid $1,200 per adult but only $500 per child.

DeSantis, Noem are breakout stars at CPAC, but Trump maintains grip on party
Former President Trump easily topped the field in the GOP presidential nomination straw poll at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), but another big winner at the nation’s largest annual gathering of conservative activists and leaders was Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Trump, as expected, easily won the straw poll of CPAC attendees, with 55% support in the hypothetical 2024 Republican primary matchup. DeSantis, who finished in second place with 21% support, was the only other Republican to reach double digits.

That's in part because the bond market is ailing as the economy gains momentum despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

Wall Street's new bogeyman: the bond market
New York (CNN Business)Covid-19 no longer seems to be the biggest concern on Wall Street as more people are getting vaccinated. Now, the focus is squarely on the bond market and inflation.
Investors are starting to worry that the economy may heat up too much, and that inflation will make an unwelcome return.
That has led to some notable volatility in the bond market lately. The US 10-year Treasury yield is now at around 1.44% after briefly spiking to 1.61% on Thursday, the highest level since before the pandemic sent rates plunging last spring. (Stocks surged Monday, though, as bond yields pulled back a bit from last week's levels.)

New York (CNN Business)Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren faces an uphill battle persuading Washington to back her tax on ultra-millionaires — starting with convincing her own party's Treasury Secretary.
Janet Yellen, whom Warren praised last year as an "outstanding choice" to lead the Treasury Department, fears a wealth tax would be too messy to implement.
"Then Janet and I need to have a conversation about implementation," Warren told CNN Business on Monday after introducing her Ultra-Millionaire Tax Act.
The 50 most ridiculous lines from Donald Trump's CPAC speech

President from 2007 to 2012, he was found guilty of trying to illegally obtain information from a senior magistrate in 2014 about an ongoing investigation into his campaign finances.
The judge said Sarkozy did not need to serve time in jail. He could serve the sentence by wearing an electronic bracelet at home.
How the Czech Republic slipped into a Covid disaster, one misstep at a time
On an epidemiological map of the world, the Czech Republic shows up as a tiny island of doom and gloom. While the global number of new coronavirus cases has been dropping for six consecutive weeks, the Central European nation of 10 million has been experiencing near record levels of new infections.
A new, more infectious variant of the virus has spread across the country, pushing Czech hospitals to the brink of collapse. The country's death toll has just surpassed 20,000. Its death rate is among the highest in the world.
Brazil's hospitals reach breaking point as health minister blames new coronavirus variants
Sao Paulo (CNN)Hospital ICUs are reaching their limits across Brazil, as health experts and state officials beg the government to impose stricter lockdown measures to reduce coronavirus transmission.
The country's ICU occupancy rates are the worst since the start of the pandemic, according to a Feb 26 report by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), a Brazilian Ministry of Health research institution.
Eighteen of Brazil's 26 states and one federal district have ICU's at over 80% capacity, federal and state data show. Nine of those are at the edge of collapse at over 90% capacity.
